合唱初心者の僕はこうしてさっこんと出会った ～How I Found Sakkon

【さっこんに合唱経験ゼロで入団した、

さっこん唯一のアメリカ人団員Kevinのエッセイです】

Most people probably join a choir group as an adult because they have choir experience from their junior high school or high school lives. I joined a choir group mainly because I had no singing experience or training. But I did have a dream. Whenever I listened to a group of people singing, when I heard the harmony line of the music, it was like magic to me. For as long as I can remember, I wished that I could also harmonize to someone else singing a melody. So my wife and I looked up various chorus groups on YouTube and we found this performance by the Sapporo Mixed Choir:

大人になってから合唱団に入団する人の多くは、中学・高校時代の合唱経験があるからだろう。私が合唱団に入ったのは、歌う経験も訓練を受けたこともなかったからだ。しかし、私には夢があった。複数の人で歌っているのを聴くとき、そのハーモニーの旋律は、まるで魔法のようだった。物心ついたときから、誰かがメロディーを歌っているときに自分もハーモニーを奏でたいと願っていた。そこで妻とYouTubeでいろいろな合唱団を調べてみたところ、札幌混声合唱団の演奏を見つけた：

To tell the truth, I wasn't entirely sure what I was watching. I could tell that it was an Ainu inspired song. That it involved hand clapping and foot stomping. And that everyone was having a really good time. So we sent an email to the group and asked if we could watch a practice. 

実を言うと、何を観ているのかよくわからなかった。アイヌの歌だということはわかった。手拍子と足踏みが入っていること。そして、みんなが本当に楽しんでいることが伝わった。そこで私たちは団にメールを送り、練習を見学させてもらえないかとお願いした。

When we showed up to practice, I was ushered over to the tenor section, given some sheet music, and made to feel at home. And two and a half years later I am still going to practice every Saturday evening, still spending 3 hours with a group of people who make me feel like I am at home, and slowly becoming a chorus singer.

練習に行くと、私はテナー・セクションに案内され、楽譜を渡され、くつろいだ気分にさせてもらった。それから3年近く経った今も、毎週土曜日の夕方に練習に通い、アットホームな雰囲気を作ってくれる仲間たちと3時間を過ごし、少しずつコーラスの歌い手になりつつある。

Probably a lot of chorus groups say that they accept people with little or no chorus experience. But Sakkon didn't just accept me, they made helped me as I stumbled my way towards being a top tenor. Sometimes they invited me to practice sessions in a karaoke box, they sent me MP3s of the tenor part so I could practice, and they always, always encouraged me to get up on stage and have a good time singing. 

おそらく多くのコーラス・グループは、コーラスの経験がほとんどない人でも歓迎すると言うだろう。しかし、さっこんは私を受け入れてくれただけでなく、トップテナーへの道を、つまずきながら歩む私を助けてくれた。時にはカラオケボックスでの練習に誘ってくれたり、テナーパートのMP3を送って練習させてくれたり、いつもいつも、ステージに立って楽しく歌えるように励ましてくれた。

In my almost 3 years as a Sakkon member I've been lucky to sing in performances with choir groups from Taiwan, sang in choir festivals in Otaru, and learned that I love pieces by composers as different as Francis Poulenc and Kinoshita Makiko. And best of all, I also learned to harmonize.

さっこんのメンバーとして約3年の間、台湾の合唱団と共演したり、小樽の合唱祭で歌ったり、フランシス・プーランクや木下牧子といった異なる作曲家の作品が大好きだということを学んだり、幸運にも歌うことができた。そして何より、ハモることがやっとできるようになりました。
