「水のいのち」の練習について 

One of my favorite parts of being in a chorus group is that moment when everyone has become familiar with a song and instead of just trying to sing the notes on the page, they start reaching for something more. For some people that could be a way to bring a sense of story to the music. For others it is trying to capture a deep underlying feeling of a phrase. But for everyone, it is an effort to bring something more to the music, a looking not down at the page and in at your own voice, but out to the each other and to the audience who will eventually be listening to us as a group.

合唱団に所属している私が好きなことのひとつは、メンバー全員が曲に慣れ親しみ、ただ音符を歌おうとするだけでなく、それ以上の何かを求め始める瞬間です。それが音楽に物語を与えることだと思う人もいるでしょう。また、フレーズの根底にある深い感情を捉えようとすることだと思う人もいるかもしれません。しかし、誰にとっても、それは音楽に何かをもたらそうとする努力であり、ページを見下ろしたり、自分の声だけを聞いたりするのではなく、お互いに、さらには最終的に、私たちの演奏を聴いてくださる聴衆に目を向けることだと思います。

The other day during our practice of Water of Life, I felt that shift happen. The opening phrasing of ‘Ocean’ became a series of waves rolling and ebbing. The muddied and shallow water in ‘Puddles´ suddenly seemed like people with all the worries and pains of daily life. And the waters of ‘Oh Ocean’ became the mist, the clouds, the rain, life itself. When Hashimoto Conductor gave directions about where to take a breath or to lay an accent, it was about much more than just the notes. 

先日、『水のいのち』の練習中に、その変化を感じることができました。冒頭の「海」のフレーズは、波が寄せては返す一連の流れとなり、「水たまり」の濁った浅い水は日々生きる中で不安や苦しみをかかえる人々と重なってきました。そして、「海よ」の海の水は霧、雲、雨、生命そのものを象徴するものとなりました。指揮者の橋本氏に、どこで息を吸うか、どこにアクセントを置くかを指示されるだけで、音符以上の意味を持つようになります。

As I wrote at the beginning of this post, I love this moment when the whole chorus group takes a step deeper in the music. But at the last practice, we were lucky to have a number of guest singers who had specifically joined us because they wanted a chance to sing Mizu No Inochi. And each of them brought a sense of joy and respect for this piece of music which, I think, helped move us all to that place where the music somehow becomes deeply personal and also deeply connecting. 

冒頭に書いたように、私はコーラスグループ全体が音楽に一歩深く入り込むこの瞬間が大好きです。しかし、先日の練習では、「水のいのち」を歌う機会を求めて特別に参加してくださった「水メン」が何名かいらっしゃいました。そして、彼ら一人ひとりがこの曲に対する喜びと尊敬の念を持ち寄ってくれたおかげで、私たち全員が音楽を通じていつの間にか深く個人的なものになり、また深くつながっていく場所へと導かれることができました。

I know that the piece is not perfect yet. There are a lot of sections that I still need to practice heavily. Probably I will be annoying people who sit next to me on the train as I listen to my recording of ‘Rain’ and hum along on my way to work. And after the drinking party after practice last night, my fellow tenor Mr. Suzuki also said to me, “Let’s rent a karaoke box and get the rest of the tenors together for some part practice.” So I’m not feeling like last night’s practice was perfect. What I do know is that, at the very least, we arrived at a place where, singing together, the music became something more, and eventually will become Sakkon’s own. And that makes each subway ride to Saturday evening practice feel like an adventure to a place both comfortable and entirely new and unexpected.  

私はこの曲がまだ完璧ではないことを理解しています。私自身練習が必要な部分がたくさん残っています。通勤電車の中で『雨』の録音を聴きながら鼻歌を歌っていると、隣に座っている人に迷惑をかけてしまうかもしれません。そして昨晩の練習後の飲み会では、私のテナー仲間である鈴木さんが「カラオケボックスを借りて、他のテナーと一緒にパート練習をしましょう」と言ってくれました。ですので、私は昨晩の練習が完璧だったとは思っていません。ただ、少なくとも一緒に歌うことで音楽がより豊かになり、最終的にはさっこん自身のものになるという場所にたどり着いたということは知っています。それがあるおかげで、土曜の夕方の練習に向かう地下鉄の旅が、心地よくもあり、まったく新しい予期せぬ冒険のように感じられるのです。
